JEROEN MENTENS - principal trombone

An active orchestral trombonist, as well as chamber musician, Jeroen Mentens makes his frequent appearances at the Opéra Royal de Wallonie and at the Flemish Radio orchestra.

In 2002, his solo peformance in Sankt Gallen, Switserland presented him as the winner of ‘Internationaler Wettbewerb für Unterhaltungsmusik’.
In November 2002 Jeroen was awarded a golden medal at the ‘Concours Européen pour Trombone, Euphonium et Chant’ European Trombone Competition de l’UGDA Luxembourg. In May 2005, Jeroen was invited in New Orleans to play the final round of the Robert Marsteller Competition organised by the International Trombone Association.

Jeroen attended major music festivals such as the European Union Youth Orchestra and the Lucerne Festival Academy and has worked with prominent conductors such as Sir Colin Davis, Bernhard Haitink, Lorin Maazel, Riccardo Chailly and Pierre Boulez. As a regular substitute he plays with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.

In December 2001 Jeroen won a scholarship of ‘Foundation SPES’, which supports promising Belgian artists. In May 2002 he gained a scholarship distributed to the six most gifted conservatory students in the Netherlands, ‘Voorziening voor Excellerende Jonge Musici’ during that period he was also financially supported by the AHK International travel funds foundation in 2002. In June 2004 Jeroen was awarded a fellow scholarship by the Belgian American Educational Foundation.

A native of Balen, Belgium, Jeroen went to the United States at age 19. He holds a Bachelor of Music from the Conservatory of Amsterdam and a Diploma from The Juilliard School (New York). While furthering his studies in Amsterdam as a candidate of Master of Music, he was appointed as principal trombone of the Brussels Philharmonic – the Radio Orchestra of Flanders (Brussels, Belgium). His teachers include Joseph Alessi and Ivan Meylemans.
