After a little over a year as conductor of Brass Band Buizingen, Harmen Vanhoorne has decided move to New Zealand in January 2020, meeting new musical and professional challenges over there. The Belgian trumpet player Simon Van Hoecke will take over the baton with immediate effect.

Following Harmen’s musical lead the band was able to attract many new musicians and to reconfirm Brass Band Buizingen as contestant in the Belgian brass band competition. The icing on the cake was the fourth place during the recent Belgian Brass Band Championship, with the same number of points as the band that came third.

Harmen Vanhoorne:

IHarmen Vanhoornet was a very challenging but exciting journey. However my move to New Zealand doesn’t allow me to continue leading the band.

I felt honoured to take the baton at Brass Band Buizingen, a band with a very strong reputation and track record. It was not at all straightforward: in one year we welcomed a big number of new players to our ranks and reshuffled a few existing players - this made it so very interesting (re)discovering the talents of all these new players.

I think the band will be in able hands with Simon, and I wish them a bright future!

The band has found an enthusiastic successor in Simon Van Hoecke. Simon is 1st trumpet soloist at the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg and teaches trumpet at the Artesis Plantijn Hogeschool Antwerpen.

Simon Van Hoecke:

Simon Van HoeckeI am aware of the rich history of Brass Band Buizingen, of the prominent place this band has always taken and of the many challenges this entails. I look forward to continuing the work of my predecessors and leading the band to new musical heights in the future. With my background as an orchestral musician, pedagogue and composer, I hope to inspire the band members, and make a valuable contribution to Belgian brass band culture.

Brass Band Buizingen is looking back on an intense but fruitful year and wishes to thank Harmen heartily for his efforts and dedication.

At the same time the band is looking forward to new projects under the baton of Simon Van Hoecke. We are confident that we have made a good choice and anticipate a successful and exciting future.
