Music from Flemish composer Paul Gilson, the father of Belgian wind band music, is featured on this very interesting disc played by two of Belgium's finest ensembles, Brassband Buizingen en the Royal Symphonic Band of the Belgian Guides. I found this recording to be a most enjoyable listening experience with music of great quality played by musicians of equal standing. Thoroughly recommended.

Although Paul Gilson is known as the father of Belgian wind band music, his over 200 compositions for wind band are rarely performed today, even in his native country. Thus, this CD is part of a project of Luc Vertommen tot revive interest in Paul Gilson's music. The excellent performances here by these two fine bands and their first rate conductors allow one to honestly evaluate the wind band music of a leading composer of the past, all of whose music should not be forgotten. This type of documentary recording is most valuable to the wind band conductor and one can only hope that more such recordings will appear in the future.

De Brabantse gemeente Buizingen bezat al sinds 1879 een fanfare. Die werd in 1975 omgevormd tot een brassband naar Brits model. In die hoedanigheid werkt het blazersensemble zich op tot één van de beste in dit land. Het ontving zelfs de eretitel van Cultureel Ambassadeur. Een initiatief als deze CD zou daar volkomen in passen, ware die titel nu niet verdwenen. In elk geval is het een grote verdienste om de blaasmuziek van Paul Gilson van onder het stof te halen. Deze uitmuntende plaat onder het motto Anthology of Flemish Band Music. We mogen dus hopen dat ze het begin is van een reeks gelijkaardige ontdekkingen.

I had never heard of Paul Gilson until I received this disc but I can now appreciate that he is rightly called the father of Belgian wind band music. The main point of interest must be the Symphonic Variations and this composition compares very favourably with British band music of that time.

Paul Gilson wordt beschouwd als de vader van de Belgische blaasmuziek. Men kan alleen maar toejuichen dat Brassband Buizingen en het Groot Harmonieorkest van de Gidsen volkomen synergisch in een Anthology of Flemish Band Music deze CD hebben gerealiseerd, hopelijk de aanzet tot een interessante serie. Deze CD verschaft ons een representatief beeld van Gilsons productie voor blaasorkest.

Na een CD helemaal gewijd aan muziek van de Vlaamse componist Paul Gilson heeft Brassband Buizingen een gelijkaardige aan de belangrijkste leerling van Gilson, nl. Marcel Poot, gewijd. De uitmuntende brassband van Buizingen vertolkt zeven stukken van Poot op deze CD waarvan diverse fanfares voor koperensemble en de 'Mouvement Symphonique', één van de belangrijkste werken voor amateursorkesten van Poot; het werd dan ook talloze keren verplicht gesteld op concoursen in binnen- en buitenland. Het Groot Harmonieorkest van de Koninklijke Muziekkapel van de Gidsen vertolkt op haar beurt vier composities van Marcel Poot. Zowel de Brassband Buizingen als 'De Gidsen' spelen op zeerhoog niveau en dit laserschijfje geeft een prachtig portret van deze belangrijke Vlaamse componist, die ondertussen, spijtig genoeg, reeds ietwat in de vergetelheid geraakt is - ten onrechte dus!
